It’s All In Our Approach

Our instruction is one-on-one, customized, and based on the Orton-Gillingham

approach to reading and spelling.

It starts with assessing where your child is now. This individualized approach to understanding our students’ needs begins with our first meeting. By gathering information from parent/student interviews, past testing and educational reports, and our own screening tools, we will clearly establish an individualized plan and create a unique roadmap of instruction and goals for your student.

Then, we design the instruction to fit. During each lesson we take anecdotal notes on each student’s performance, highlighting areas that need additional practice. These notes, coupled with the overall scope and sequence of instruction, is the driving force behind subsequent lessons, making it extremely individualized. This allows our students to move as fast as they can, but as slow as they need to.

It involves all the senses. Our students experience reading and writing through all the learning pathways, including visual, auditory, touch, and kinesthetic movement, which enhances both learning and memory.

It’s structured – with a lot of student practice. We move one step at a time, but are continually circling back to previously taught material. Our students are shown the ”why” behind our language, as well as how to “think” through their work.

It's creative! Keeping our students engaged and actively learning is key. We use engaging activities and teaching methods to make sure our students create a connection with the concepts they are being taught.

Emotions count, too. We realize self-esteem is often jeopardized when learning is difficult. Therefore, we give students the opportunity to be successful, build mastery and confidence, and make learning a happy experience.

Flexibility is key. While we use Orton-Gillingham at our core, we know there is no one program that meets the diverse needs of all students. We are trained in many other programs and may use aspects of more than one program in order to best match the learning styles of our students. We also incorporate our own proven resources, tools, and activities to ensure active engagement.

We celebrate success! Our ultimate goal for students is to build their confidence and give them strategies and tools they can use successfully in their daily reading both at home and in school. Nothing makes us happier than the moment they realize “they’ve got this” and tell us which tips and techniques they used to make it happen.
